Ronald “Cowboy” Nye Rugby Scholarships.

Donation protected
With the support and approval of his family, The Ronald "Cowboy" Nye Scholarship was created by three former rugby teammates of Cowboy . One teammate (Joey) was a rookie with Cowboy on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Rugby Team back in the early ’90s. They continued to play rugby together with the Pittsburgh City/Forge Rugby Team after graduating college. The second (Tony) helped coach Cowboy in his early years at IUP and later became a teammate on the Pitt City Rugby Team. The third (Randy) was also a teammate with Cowboy in his early years at IUP and also helped coach Cowboy along the way.

Cowboy lived and breathed the sport of rugby. He coached and mentored hundreds of players over three decades. Even though he had a tough exterior, he was one of the most kind, compassionate, and generous people we have ever met. He never told anyone this and would be mad that we even mentioned it, but he used to give Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to the homeless under the bridge near our local rugby pub (Ruggers Pub). Cowboy lived a life as he wanted with his own motto; "I do my best to make life a high-five."

The funds will be used to support two rugby scholarships. One for a current high school student-athlete from Western Pennsylvania planning to attend IUP to pursue their academic and rugby dreams. The second scholarship will be for a current IUP Rugby player who exemplifies all the qualities and attributes that Cowboy modeled as a rugby player for IUP and Pitt City; Team Player, Loyalty, Work Ethic, and Passion for the sport of rugby.

This scholarship is a way to honor Cowboy’s dedication, commitment, and passion for rugby while giving back to the sport and young student-athletes at his alma mater.
