Hey everyone. I'm Emily (IT the clown with a flower crown. Don't ask). I have been on dialysis (peritoneal and hemodialysis) since I was eight years old due to a chronic kidney disease that led to total renal failure when I was around five. I am twenty-two now and have been on hemodialysis for five years.
I have always wanted to travel the world, but it is very hard to when I am dependent on a machine three days a week to keep me alive. Costs overseas are astronomical (per treatment!) and my insurance, unfortunately, does not cover anything in different countries.
But this summer (June-July), I have a chance to study abroad for a month with my school. I am a senior in college and I thought that I may as well go abroad while I have the chance. With my health how it is, I can sincerely say that I do not know how long I have left. I had a scare when I was eighteen (septic shock-my heart stopped twice) and ever since then, I have told myself "f**k it. You have to live NOW." I am not letting myself give this opportunity up. Especially because the school's health insurance for students abroad covers my hemodialysis treatment costs. (Hooray!)
However, it does not cover transportation costs. Hence, the point of my GoFundMe. It's going to cost around $1100 (€893), but obviously, I'm happy with as much as I can get. It's short notice, but I am out of ideas on how to get any more money for my transportation. There is a bus in Rome from where I am staying, to the dialysis center(s), but the ride is forty-five minutes long and I would be traveling in a strange city, alone, at night. Maybe I'm being too cautious, but I would rather get to where I am going safely.
What you raise will be used for my transportation. If I cannot raise enough, I will be unable to go to Rome, since if I don't have my hemodialysis treatments, I will die. Just whatever you can give, anything you want. Even if it's just to spread the word.
