Romeo's Chemotherapy Fund

Donation protected
Romeo is an 11 yr old Shetland Sheepdog. A recent emergency surgery situation ultimately resulted in a diagnosis of mucinous adenocarcinoma in the small intestine. The surgery successfully removed the primary cancerous lesion, but metastases were noted throughout the intestinal mesentery.

An oncology consultation has indicated that, without chemotherapy, Romeo would be expected to survive 1-3 months beyond initial diagnosis (September 2017). However, with chemotherapy, that estimate could easily be extended to 10-12 months, or even further!

Romeo is currently happy and showing no adverse signs of illness. He loves playing fetch, going for walks, barking at the other dogs, and performing silly tricks for treats. Food and tennis balls rule his world! I've been assured that the negative effects of chemotherapy will be limited primarily to temporary stomach upset surrounding treatment days.

Romeo is scheduled to begin chemotherapy treatment on September 27th, 2017, and will proceed with treatments of doxorubicin every 3 weeks for 6 total treatments. He will be receiving treatment and care from Dr. Kathleen Phillips at the Olney Sandy Spring Veterinary Hospital, in Olney, MD. The estimated total cost of this course of chemotherapy is $1,700.  Since I am still recovering from the emergency surgery costs from two weeks ago (which tallied to over $7,000), and expect to be paying that off for a long time to come, any added help that I could receive toward Romeo's ongoing treatment would be greatly appreciated! Donations beyond the $1,700 goal will be applied to paying off the debts incurred from the surgery bill, or any additional testing or supportive medications required during the course of chemotherapy.

Ultimately, Romeo's quality of life will be my utmost concern. He is presently pain-free and enjoying life, and neither he nor I are ready to see that end yet. My goal will be to keep him that way for as long as possible, whether that include the full course of chemotherapy or not. If he were not happy at this point in the process, I would not be pursuing these extensive measures of treatment.

Romeo is loved far and wide. Not only does he have over 70 performance-related titles, but he is quadruple-certified as a therapy dog in both Canada and the US. He's retired from therapy work now, but over the years has brought smiles to countless people in senior homes, palliative care facilities, children's wards, and private therapy sessions. Anyone that has seen him in any ring will know that he is a happy, enthusiastic worker, always eager to play a new game or show off a new trick. He's my "steady Eddie", and still holds that same zest and enthusiasm for all things.  Please consider helping us to extend that time a little bit longer. 11 years is not enough for his sweet boy with so much to give.
