We have employed Roger Vermeulen since he was just a teenager, and he has been an important part of our team ever since. We at Heritage Packaging, along with many of Roger's family, friends, and colleagues, are raising money to help him and his family cover the cost of his medical bills and other incurred expenses caused by his recent diagnosis that may not be covered by insurance. We hope you'll read further to learn more about our dear friend and employee and join our efforts!
Roger Vermeulen is a hardworking, salt-of-the-earth kind of guy. We all know him as a dedicated family man and the father of three wonderful children. As a volunteer fireman he has demonstrated his community mindedness and compassion for other people for many years. Those of us who know him and benefit from his great sense of humor, also know that we are lucky to call him a friend.
Roger recently received some very sad and serious news: After undergoing several weeks of examinations and treatments for an increasingly painful condition, he was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer, which had metastasized to several other areas of the body.
He got that news on a Friday night, and on the following Tuesday underwent surgery to remove a large mass from his neck. The surgery was successful at helping to relieve some of his pain, but one week later a PET scan revealed that there is little hope that Rog will survive this cancer.
Roger, the strong-willed and incredibly brave individual that he is, has elected to forgo any further treatment. The way he put it to me was, “I’m going for the quality of life, not the quantity of it.” His family is firmly behind him in his decision, and although deeply saddened, they are all there for him offering support and love that one needs in such times.
He is amazingly upbeat and positive, and although he doesn’t like his situation he has accepted it. His biggest concern is for the welfare of his family. Medical care in this day and age is expensive, and health insurance doesn’t always cover all the expenses. An extensive surgical operation and numerous scans, MRI’s, tests, and medications have added up quickly.
Many people that know Roger through business, the fire hall, from school, and elsewhere, and have asked how they can help. We believe that the way to truly help Roger right now is to help make sure that his family isn't strapped with serious financial problems because of medical bills that aren't covered by insurance.
If we can all contribute to “Roger’s Medical Fund” soon, it may afford him some peace of mind in knowing that his family will be spared from financial hardship.
