Roger Carlson Hit-N-Run Recovery Fund

Please consider donating money to Roger's Hit-N-Run Recovery Fund, because he needs your support for his healing.  Roger Carlson, age 83, was hit by a black SUV on the night of April 26th.  He was off the road walking towards the bus stop up Walton Creek Road when he was struck by the SUV that failed to stop at the stop sign by Owl Hoot Road and swung wide hitting him with their right front bumper.  The driver of the SUV didn't stop and continued driving up Walton Creek Road. Luckily, a witness who was at the bus stop across the road from the incident saw it all happen.  He was first on the scene, and he flagged down the oncoming bus to call for help.  When Roger went to the hospital, they did a thorough examination to determine what his injuries were. He broke his nose, 3 vertebrae, his pelvic bone, and his patella. In addition, he hit his head on the left side and, with that, he needed stitches above his left eye and on his upper lip.  He also got a concussion. His partial denture was also chipped in the accident. Roger spent three nights at Yampa Valley Medical Center.  Then, he was transferred to The Doak Walker Center at Casey's Pond where he stayed for about six weeks.  Medicare paid for 20 days at The Doak Walker Center, but his supplemental health insurance is not going to cover the additional 19 days that he was there.  There was a misunderstanding when processing his supplemental insurance, and, therefore, once the mistake was realized, the charges were already accrued. Because it was a hit-n-run, there is no insurance from the responsible party either that would help to pay the accrued medical bills. Roger lives on a meager fixed income of a monthly social security payment.  He will begin to receive his medical bills, but he will not have the means to pay them back much based on his poor finances. Nonetheless, he is extremely thankful for all of the care that he received at the hospital and the rehabilitation center which has lead to his healing.  Throughout this whole experience, Roger has remained optimistic.  He believes that his life was sparred by Jesus that night, and he wishes no ill will on the driver.  He is grateful that he is alive, and he is continuing to improve everyday. He went home on June 7, and he is glad to be home. However, he is still suffering from his head injury with significant vertigo that keeps him from sleeping in a prone position as well as a constant throbbing headache on his left frontal lobe. His fractures are healing, and the most significant one, his patella, is still being stabilized in a brace. His facial and head abrasions have healed, but, he has some scarring left where they were.  He still needs to get the chips in his partial denture fixed.  Roger and our family are grateful for any support with his medical bills and needs that resulted from this horrible experience. The money that you donate will go directly to pay his accrued medical bills from Yampa Valley Medical Center and  Casey’s Pond as well as his upcoming dental bills to repair the dental damage that occurred from the accident.
