Brazilian Jiu Jitsu came to the United States during the 80’s. It started getting recognition with the early UFC “No Holds Barred Events.” These events showcased the effectiveness of this new to type of martial art. The demand for learning in America was so great; it brought out the best of the bests to teach the art to anyone with the desire to learn. A shift has occurred as a result of this, especially for the kids.
The biggest tournaments for kids happen in California. Therefore, if you live in California, your kid can learn from the best of the best and then take a short drive to compete at the greatest Jiu Jitsu tournaments in the World for kids. If your child is talented, he or she can start at an early age, making a name for himself or helrself, and begin to receive recognition and sponsorships.
Well, what about the kids who are left behind? What about the ones who have the talent but are thousands of miles away, or simply the ones who don’t have the financial means to pursue their dreams?
In Brazil there is a city called Manaus located in the state of Amazonia. Manaus is home to three promising future world champions, Diogo Reis, Micael Galvao, and Joao Victor. They should be competing in the Juvenile and Kids division as their ages are 16, 15 and 14, respectively. Instead, they have been busy dismantling the Blue Belt Adult division by storm. All three of these teenagers are being trained under Melqui Galvao, father of Micael. Melqui Galvao is a black belt and runs a small gym in Manaus. At his gym, Melqui trains anyone regardless if they can pay or not. Due to the fact that there is a lot of poverty, violence, and economic instability, most of Melqui’s students pay him little to nothing to train Jiu Jitsu. He keeps training them to keep them off the streets and to show them a better way. He firsthand knows the many pitfalls these kids in Manaus face given his occupation as a police officer.
Melqui’s greatest struggle today, is to get these three extremely hard working and talented kids to California. He has to feed them, house them, and get them to and from the tournaments. This takes a lot more time, effort, and money than one single person can afford working as a police officer in Brazil. These kids are sweet, humble, and talented. They deserve a chance to compete and demonstrate their skills. Please help anyway you can by sharing, donating or both. Help these admirable kids who have the talent but not the location to become successful. The amount we are asking is probably just enough to cover the 2019 season for the professor and the three children. This would be a great start!
