Rodica Gavris is a 56 year old Romanian, wife and mother, who is unlucky enough to need medical care in a country where the medical system has systematically decreased in quality in the past 10 years.
She was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer in 2013. Cervical cancer prevention Awareness amongst Romanian women over the age of 45 is acutely missing in this country. My mother never saw the need to take a Pap Smear test and her family doctor never really stressed the issue.
After 6 months of radiation she was told her tumor had stopped growing and apart from 3-4 month check-ups, she can go back to her normal life.
Needles to say her normal life lasted about a month. She started having abdominal pain and her doctors continued to tell her she was fine, pain after radiation was normal.
By December 2014, she weighed about 70 pounds. My mother was never a big woman, but even for a 5.3" tall woman 70 pounds is very thin.
Finally in January 2015 after more tests it was discovered her tumor had extended to her colon, bladder and uterus. Her surgery was January 26th and she had a total removal of all the cancer inflicted organs. Recovery will be extremely slow and painful but we continue to be hopeful.
This painful journey has taken its emotional, physical and financial toll on our family and we are very far from seeing the light at the end of this tunnel.
