Rod needs a wheelchair van

Donation protected
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

In 2015 I had a basal ganglia haemorrhagic stroke. This left me paralysed on my right hand side, with generally limited mobility, and reliant on an electric wheelchair to get around.  I was 47 at the time and loving my job teaching environmental economics at university. This has obviously had huge impact on all of my family, particularly my darling wife and two boys.

I live in the country town of Bathurst and could not ask for better family, friends or medical assistance. Everyone has been wonderful. There is limited wheelchair transport in Bathurst and often what is available is ‘off the road’. There have been many times I have not been able to attend special occasions simply because no transport was available.

I miss being able to travel with my family to something as simple as a football game or cricket game. I miss being able to visit my parents and sister in Canberra. I miss so much that could improve mine and my family’s lives if we could travel together -- even just meeting for lunch.

I have been conditionally approved for the modifications for a wheelchair van but I cannot afford to buy the van to modify. There are very strict rules that apply and the van has to be under 3 years old and have less than 45,000km on it. It also has to be a KIA Carnival so the search is on for a car that can be modified.

I have a limited time to raise the money. NDIS may take away approval if we do not action this by early 2019.
