My name is Sandra Matthews. My mother Karla Rockwell & my sister Susan Sanders recently lost their home of 30+ years to the Almeda fire that ravaged the communities of North Ashland, Talent & Phoenix Oregon.
Karla moved here from Germany 35 years ago after meeting my dad, Andy, while he was overseas with the Army. She worked at Harry and David for 23 years until she took an early retirement to take care of my dad- taken all too soon and suddenly by cancer. Since then, she has been supporting herself and my sister Susan who has some developmental disabilities, on a fixed income.
Susan and the family dog Jack were famous around the neighborhood- everyone knew them both by name. Since '95 Susan has worked part time at the Ashland Food Co-op. She had just started going back to work after the Covid shut-down. She relies on public transportation to get around, now she's unable to get back to work.
Like so many of their neighbors, they only had minutes to pack what they could and get out safely; which wasn't much more than the clothes on their backs and Jack.
We are still unsure if they will be able to rebuild their home where it once stood, or if they will have to start over somewhere else. For now they are safe and sheltered with us in south Medford, but they will need help getting their lives back to normal- Clothes, bedroom furniture, and assistance purchasing medication and basic supplies.
