Bat Rescue Rockhampton - help save orphaned pups

Yesterday a 6wk old baby flying fox died in my arms. He had been rescued from the Rockhampton Botanical gardens the day before and despite all best efforts he died as his little heart and lungs gave out.

A needless waste and completely preventable.

Bats are doing it tough all over but never more so that in the colonies around Rockhampton and Central QLD.

Bats are often vilified and blamed for spreading disease and causing destruction yet these beautifully compassionate, loving and sentient beings have since the dawn of time been central to the planet’s eco system and bio diversity.

Here in Australia they play a vital role in replenishing the bush fire ravaged forests. The thousands of seeds they disperse every night grow into plants, bushes and trees that the koalas, possums and other indigenous wildlife rely on to survive.

Without bats there would be less Koalas and without volunteer rescuers there would be less bats.

In the last few months alone the bats have been decimated by a heat event (temp over 40deg) which saw thousands of bats falling from the trees as they perished in the high temperatures. This event occurred during baby pup season. On top of this the local council made the devastating decision to disperse the bats from the local area causing great distress to the bats and their pups. This resulted in hundreds more dropping from the trees, aborting or abandoning their pups or dying in the trees in terror.

They work tirelessly out of their homes, the back of cars, back yards and make shift sanctuaries dedicating their lives to the protection of bats.

With additional funds they can establish an education programme to educate the local community and younger generations about bats. I hope this will attract more volunteers to train to be bat rescuers and carers.

With only a small number of local volunteers their current reach is limited.  Many hands make light work and the more people and funds we can attract the more bats we can help.

I have never started a fundraiser before but having seen first hand the dire situation up in Rockhampton I can not sit back and do nothing. I myself am a vaccinated carer for a group in Brisbane but being 8 hours away all I can do in the short term is raise awareness and funds.

Please donate to this cause.

I’m hoping by setting up the fundraiser we can show them how loved bats are and how appreciative we are of their efforts and how grateful people are for their tireless work in protecting such a special and important part of nature.
Thank you, with love and gratitude Lucy

* Any bat by itself during the day is in trouble. Please call your local wildlife rescue immediately. Never touch a bat.

Only vaccinated carers/rescuers are permitted to handle bats.
