Roches Relay Cycle for Cochlear Implant Research

Donation protected
The Roche family have decided to raise funds for the National Hearing Implant and Research Centre at Beaumont Hospital. The Cochlear Implant Team has played a very important role in my life over the years and we will always be grateful to them. On Tuesday, 11th August, Niall, Tadhg, Aoife, Mam, Dad and I will complete a 226km relay cycle from Closutton to Beaumont Hospital and back again that same day.

20 years ago, there was a huge possibility that I would be living in a silent world for the rest of my life having been left profoundly deaf as a result of contracting meningitis when I was three years old.

Receiving a cochlear implant at Beaumont Hospital in February 2000 helped change the course of my life and transformed it for the better. My cochlear implant has given me the wonderful opportunity to hear, speak and interact with the world around me.

A cochlear implant is a medical device that is surgically inserted into the ear, sending an electrical message through a wire called an electrode directly to the auditory nerve bypassing the damaged cells. This, combined with an external processor, means that, provided the auditory nerve is still working, profoundly deaf people can hear sound - thus transforming the lives of thousands of individuals with profound hearing loss.

National Hearing Implant and Research Centre
The National Hearing Implant and Research Centre (NHIRC) in Beaumont Hospital carry out ground-breaking research in cochlear implants and neurological disorders of the ear in children and adults. This centre is spearheaded by Professor Laura Viani who performed my surgery in 2000.

The funds that are raised in this relay cycle will go towards the NHIRC helping them to continue their research into improving cochlear implants, leading to better outcomes for people with profound hearing loss in Ireland.

All support would be very much appreciated and any donations big or small are welcome.

We are looking forward to this challenge
