HERRIMAN — A two-alarm fire early Saturday morning in a two-story house resulted in a total loss, authorities said.

The family that lived at 14652 Quiet Glen Drive (4950 West) was apparently away, Unified Fire spokesman Matthew McFarland said. He said thick black smoke was reported coming from the home by a man walking his dog around 4 a.m.

Crews were quickly overtaken by the size of the fire, McFarland said, and additional firefighters from Bluffdale, Murray, South Jordan and West Jordan responded. A call for a third alarm was canceled as they got the fire under control, he said.

Neighboring homes were evacuated as a safety precaution but were not damaged, McFarland said. He said there was no people or pets inside the home and none of the 30 firefighters battling the blaze were injured.

He said the cause of the fire is under investigation, and that the home is considered a total loss, but its value is not yet known.
