Robert Kulig Medical Rehab Fund

The first nightmare faded into the second.  Our son, Robert Kulig, 24 years of age, disappeared on June 17, 2017 around 8 pm..  He left home without his cell phone, or wallet as he was taking his dog for a short walk.  But he never returned.  When my husband and I came back home from a Saturday evening out with friends my son’s dog, Zara was in the yard still wearing her leash.  My son was no-where to be found yet we noticed his cell and wallet were in his room.  Michael and I had no idea that a neighbor saw the dog trying to get in our house and opened the yard for her.

It was odd but we didn’t yet suspect foul play. Robert always took his phone and wallet when he went out but it was the next day, June 18th, Father’s Day that really became alarming.  Robert was supposed to hike with his dad and then hang out so why hadn’t he come home?  Why hadn’t he called?

We contacted all his friends, relatives, local law enforcement agencies and contacted local hospitals. No one knew a thing.  We put up fliers.  Waiting was brutal.  Was Robert abducted?  Was he lying somewhere hurt?  Was he alive?

We took his dog, Zara everywhere in the neighborhood to see if anyone knew anything.   What happened?  We called to continually check on the filed missing persons report and were told by police, “Some people don’t want to be found.”  We knew that was not the case with our boy.

A week after enduring unbearable emotional pain and being heartsick that we knew nothing about our son’s disappearance… finally a woman saw the flier and phoned.  She knew about a car accident that was the same night Robert went missing.  She knew that a young male without ID was involved and was taken to Holy Cross Mission Hills.

We ran to Holy Cross ICU. There laid a young man in a medically induced coma.  He was so swollen they only way we knew it was our son was from a recent medical scar and his belongings.

Robert fell though the cracks in the system.  Though we contacted the police and the hospitals every few hours asking for ‘Robert Kulig’, and called back asking for ‘John Doe,’ we were consistently told incorrect information – we were told there was no one there fitting our son’s description.

Robert’s medical issues include fracture of cranium, fractures of the orbits of the eyes and an intracranial bleed.  He has fractures of his left hand, and he is left handed.

Robert was woken from the coma on June 27th.  He can hear but he can’t see.  He is terrified and traumatized.  He has no use of right hand and his memory is patchy.

The doctors do not know whether his brain and his eyes are permanently damaged and won’t know for many months until the swelling subsides. What we do know is that Robert can not be alone and needs assistance full time

Imagine your college-aged child is going out to take his dog for a walk and not returning and that after being gone a week you find out they were hit by a car.  Imagine that we still do not know who hit our child!  This is every parents’ nightmare.  Any financial assistance for Robert’s care is very much appreciated.  Please pray for our son.
