Bob Johnson Medical Fund

Bob recently found out that he has colon cancer.  Thankfully, it appears not to have spread to lymph nodes, but in order to ensure that the disease is eradicated, his doctors are recommending both chemotherapy and radiation, which are scheduled to start within a week or so. Those of you who know Bob know that he's a very proud person, and has that typical Scandinavian stoicism where it's very difficult to ask for help.  But Bob also knows that there are times in everyone's life when you have to reach out to your network of friends and family acquired over the course of a life well-lived, and ask for a helping hand. Those of you who know Bob also know that he's struggled to find steady employment over the past few years.  He's been fortunate to find periodic contract work, but this is in no way the kind of work where employees are granted health insurance or FMLA. Unfortunately, life doesn't consider a person's circumstances before throwing them a curve ball.  Bob is ready to fight this disease with all the stubbornness and tenacity that we know and love in him, but he needs his friends and family to fight beside him.  It's going to be a long, tiring, painful, and challenging journey. Bob will need help with medical and living expenses during the course of several months, as he undergoes treatment and recovery.  He also may need help from those in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in getting to and from medical appointments and possibly with basic household assistance. Bob has been a great friend to so many people over the years; we're hoping that his friends, family, and loved ones will be able to help out now, when he needs us the most. One of my fondest memories of Bob is when Bruce and I were moving from Superior to Madison, back in 1986.  We had just graduated from UW-Superior, along with many of our friends, and most of them had scattered to various places for the summer.  We were pretty much alone, moving an entire second-floor apartment full of furniture, clothing, and various other possessions, along with an antique piano, which was being temporarily stored in Bruce and Bob's fraternity house.  We were just about to start loading our U-Haul, anticipating a tough, back-breaking day ahead of us, where we might not even be able to get everything into the truck, when up drives Bob, who had been out of town as well (in Ashland, if memory serves).  In typical Bob fashion, he asked, "Hey, whatcha doin'?" and proceeded to help us load everything in the truck and set off on our way to our new home.  Bob is like that...he pitches in and helps out, not asking for anything in return.  (Although he's been known to take a beer in payment. :) ) Bob needs all of us now.  Please consider helping our friend and brother, in whatever way you can. Thank you, and much love to you all! Jackie and Bruce Johnson
