Robert Jr. needs New Wheels

Donation protected
Our son Robert is a very independent 34 year old adult who lives on his own and asks very little of his family and friends in the way of help and support. We are starting this GoFundMe Campaign so Robert can obtain a new wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Robert's History:

When Robert was 2 years old he was involved in a motor vehicle accident with his mother and brother. Although there were no fatalities Robert's injuries left him paralyzed from the waist down. After several months in a Boston Hospital for rehabilitation Robert came home and that is when the real work started not only for this 2 year old who was just mastering walking and running but for his family as well. For seven years following the accident there was alot of positive pushing from his mom, dad, brother, sister as well as family and friends which resulted in alot of tears along the way. Seven years after the accident my wife and Robert met a gentleman associated with the Shriners Hospital and he recommended Robert be seen there. Well, we took him up on his invitation and could not have been happier we did. More years of Physical Therapy ensued and then in 1998 while a patient at the Shriners Hospital for Childern in Philadelphia he was the first adolescent/adult to receive an implanted Functional Electronical Stimulation (FES) system. This program enabled him to further advanced his independence into adulthood. He learned how to walk with the system,  he learned how to drive with special hand controls, earnd his High School Diploma, obtained his Associate Degree and has worked since he was sixteen years old and currently works for WalMart.

Now the but:

When Robert turned 26 years old he was no longer eligible for assistance from the Shriners Hospital and has since relied mostly on his wheelchair for mobility because his FES equipment no longer functions correctly all the time and is no longer serviced by the company he was assigned to upon exiting the Shirners Hospital program. It has failed on him several times with many falls, but thankfully no major injuries related to its failure but we are always nervous about it. He uses his system for very short periods to walk from the drivers door of his car (Scion Xb) to the back hatch where he pulls out his wheelchair, transfers to it and goes from there. Recently he broke his foot when his wheel chair fell out of the back and knocked him down. Due to this incident he could not put weight on his foot so his mom, dad and friends had to assist him driving back and forth to work or being there to get his chair in or out of the car. It is for these reasons we are creating this GoFundMe Campaign. If he can purchase a new vehicle that is all wheelchair accessible he will be able to maintain his independence if he should have another incident or his FES system completely fails. Because of his employment and his income he cannot afford this type of vehicle and unfortunately his parents cannot come to his aide for that amount.

If and when Robert should be able to purchase such a vehicle he will donate his Scion Xb to either someone that needs a Hand Controlled vehicle associated with the Shriners Hospital or another Charitable Organization.

We would like to thank each and everyone in advance who makes a Campaign contribution regardless of the amount.
