Rob Roy Way - walk for cancer

The Rob Roy Way – My Way

As a nurse, I have witnessed many patients being told that they have cancer. In that instant, their lives and the lives of those close to them change forever. But I never thought at age 39 I would hear the words said to me…. “You have cancer”.

The instant fear and sadness is overwhelming but in my case I had a team of health professionals from two hospitals that not only made me feel safe, but showed me dedication, kindness and compassion beyond words.

It’s been five years since I finished my treatment and two years since the loss of my dearest friend to cancer but those teams are still by my side and have helped me navigate life after cancer.

So now I feel it’s time for me to pay it forward. In April 2019, my team and I will be walking the Rob Roy Way in Scotland.  The Rob Roy Way is a 124km walk linking Drymen with Pitlochry in Perthshire, the way joins paths and tracks through the Scottish Highlands.  Our team will trek between 16-22km a day tracing in the footsteps of my clan, the McGregor’s.

All funds raised during the Roby Roy Way Challenge will support oncology services at two of the state’s best healthcare providers.  Your donation will go directly towards The Cabrini Breast Cancer Oncology Team (Brightways) and towards Cancer Research at The Alfred, helping to provide the best service, care and treatment for those living with cancer.

The Alfred treats thousands of people living with cancer. Alfred Health’s cancer service includes 28 inpatient beds, 18 day procedure beds, and a large radiotherapy and chemotherapy centre. The Alfred’s cancer services allow for close clinical coordination with a range of cancer specialists, including surgeons, medical oncologists, haematologists, nursing and allied health specialists.

The Cabrini cancer (Brightways) service provides multidisciplinary care which, in simple terms, means that Cabrini’s health professionals – surgeons, oncologists, breast care nurses, physiotherapists and counsellors ‒ all work together to determine the best course of treatment for individuals, addressing specific needs. Treatment is planned by a multidisciplinary healthcare team with Brightways providing care for over 550 new patients per year.

Cabrini also has a tailor made reconditioning program, designed especially to help breast cancer patients; the 8-week course includes physical rehabilitation and psychological group support. Topics addressed include sexual health after cancer, body image, relationships and communication and mindfulness meditation.

Thank you for sharing in our journey.
