Rise Above Lucia Garcia & baby Dominique

On Wednesday,  afternoon we got the news that my sister Lucia, 21, and my nephew Dominique, 7 months old, were victims of gunshots by the hands of Dominique’s father. I was at my Perham home, when I learned the news. We immediately drove up to Fargo hospital were we learned further details on the extent of their injuries.

Lucia’s injuries include a gunshot wound to the upper right chest area. CPR was performed during transfer to the hospital and upon arrival, she was taken directly to surgery to repair injury to her brachiocephalic artery which caused her to lose almost all her blood volume. This required open chest surgery. Lucia was then transfused with blood products and taken to ICU for monitoring. Lucia is currently stable and awaiting a second (revision) surgery.

 

Baby boy, Dominique, was wounded on the left thigh and left side of his tummy. The bullet that entered the left side of his tummy entered and exited hitting the hand. Surgery was performed on his hand to repair the affected fingers.

Doctors are managing his pain and trying to keep him as comfortable as possible. Dominique is expected to make a full recovery.

 

Lucia gave birth to Dominique here in Fargo Medical Center last fall. His birth brought so much joy and hope for her Dominique’s father, but their relationship had always been troubled. We were aware of the constant ups and downs in their relationship but time after time Lucia insisted on making their relationship work for the sake of baby Dominique.

 

This is a tragedy and a nightmare to everyone involved and our only focus right now is keeping Lucia and Dominique safe and on their path to recovery.

 

This event is going to mark Lucia and Dominique’s life forever. We ask anyone that knew them to touch their hearts and keep them in your prayers.

 

We welcome any help to pay for medical expenses for Lucia and Dominique. Lucia’s journey to recovery will be a long one and will require ongoing medical care.
