Kupa Women's Project

TOGETHER. WE. CAN.

My name is Michelle Rigava, and I am fundraising for a project to help the women of Zimbabwe.  I will be stock piling sanitary essentials in the UK to  donate them to some of the women in parts of Zimbabwe's rural and urban areas. I am hoping to have raised sufficient funds by May 2019 because I would like to go between June and July 2019. I believe you can help me do this.

I have always had a passion for Women's Health because I feel that not enough investment is put into women. This may be by government, or those in the position of authority. I vowed to myself, to one day be the difference I want to see in the world. It begins with one small step.

When it comes to mother nature, she doesn't discriminate on the circumstances each woman has to face, but simply takes her course. Some women in the developing world either don’t have access to sanitary wear or cannot afford it, as it is not within their budget. On average, women in Zimbabwe are surviving on $USD50-$USD350 per month salaries, which must be spread across taking care of their families, school fees, medical bills, groceries etc. Sanitary wear can cost about $20 a month which a lot of the women of Zimbabwe simply cannot afford. Some women use cloths or tissue when they are menstruating because that is the only option they have.

Studying a Biochemistry degree has educated me on the vast microorganisms that cause diseases(pathogens), that simply exist in the air. Some of them can be very deadly. If a woman is using a cloth for her period, then washes it and hangs it up to dry, the cloth can be infested with microorganisms. This poses some health risks which can be avoided with the presence of disposable sanitary wear.

In addition, menstrual cups will also be a part of the sanitary wear I am looking to donate. I have partnered with some of the menstrual cup companies, to allow me to introduce this amazing cost efficient method of dealing with the menstrual cycle. They will also be donated for this project!

This opportunity was made available to me by a team in my university called ‘Go Global’ where each applicant can apply for an amount of money to be funded for any project they wish to carry out, anywhere in the world. What an opportunity, I thought.  I applied for the funding and within 2 weeks, I was approved. I was awarded with the maximum amount of £1000 and I was elated. Someone believed in what I wanted to do!

Although I have received some money for this project, I would like to raise more money. The funds I have received are solely going to buy the sanitary towels i.e. tampons, pads, panty liners.

If I can raise more money, I will be able to employ a small team in Zimbabwe, that will help me carry out the project. Zimbabwe is a developing country and a lot of costs will be incurred as a result of this project such as fuel to and from the destinations my team and I will be travelling to and shipping the goods to Zimbabwe from the UK.

We always ask ourselves, what changes we can make in someone's life and sometimes it is that small donation we make. Sometimes it is that small act of kindness.

Please help me make a difference by sponsoring any amount to this project.

No amount is too small.
