<div>Two years ago I rode my bicycle 5000 km from Quebec to British Columbia, and used the trip as a means of raising money for a women’s soccer team in Nicaragua where I had worked and made lifetime friends. While the ride across the country, the scenery and the people I met were awesome, perhaps even more awesome was being able to help a bunch of inspired women footballers buy uniforms, pre-game meals and pay for the bus to their games.

<div>This fall I am preparing another project, to ride from Nelson BC to San Diego California. Conscious of how fortunate I am to be able to embark on this 3000km journey, I want to try to give back in a small way by fundraising for Mar Elias Secondary School in Galilee, Israel.
</div>
<div>While on a visit/pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 2019, I spent a day at this school and got to meet its founder, former Archbishop Elias Chacour. As a teacher myself I was amazed that such a place could exist.
</div>
<div>The not-for-profit institution was founded in 1981, against the wishes of the Israeli government, and has grown to a student population of 2000 today. It is a Church organization, but is non-denominational, and enrols Palestinian Muslims and Christians who live in Israel. Its 200 teachers and staff are Christian, Muslim and Jewish. The school has always had international support and partnerships, but is experiencing a funding shortage because of budget cuts due to the current war, as money has been redirected to Israel’s military expenditures.

<div>While I follow world events with great interest, trying to help this school is not an attempt at a political statement. It’s about education. In Canada school is guaranteed and universal. Not so in many other parts of the world. Furthermore, I cannot think of any better way to build a more tolerant society than by starting in school. Mar Elias’ foundation is the Beatitudes from the Bible. Maybe you’ve read them, maybe not. In my opinion it doesn’t matter in the least whether you are religious. The message to “Treat people the way you want to be treated” and to “Love your enemies” is more necessary than ever, at a time when our media and politicians arguably want to make us afraid and divided rather than united. Nothing could be more important for children to learn, not only in the Middle East but in schools everywhere.

<div>Mar Elias School is showing the way. In fact, with this same message of non violence and unity, Elias Chacour has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
</div>
<div>Please note that ALL money raised will be used to help with the tuition fees of students having financial difficulties, not my personal trip expenses.
</div>

<div>Il y a deux ans, j'ai parcouru 5 000 km à vélo du Québec à la Colombie-Britannique. En même temps, j’ai intégré dans mon voyage un recueillement de fonds pour une équipe féminine de football au Nicaragua, un pays où j'avais travaillé bénévole et où je me suis fait des amies pour la vie. Même si la traversée du pays, les paysages et les gens que j'ai rencontrés étaient géniaux, le plus génial encore était de pouvoir aider un groupe de footballeuses inspirées à acheter des uniformes, des repas d'avant-match et à payer le bus pour se rendre à leurs parties.

<div>Cet automne, je prépare un autre projet – de pédaler de Nelson BC à San Diego en Californie. Conscient de la chance que j'ai de pouvoir entreprendre ce voyage de 3000 km, je veux essayer en même temps d’aider une cause, cette fois-ci l'école secondaire Mar Elias en Galilée, en Israël.

<div>Lors d'une visite/pèlerinage en Terre Sainte en 2019, j'ai passé une journée dans cette école et j'ai rencontré son fondateur, l'ancien archevêque Elias Chacour. En tant qu'enseignant moi-même, j'ai été étonné qu'un tel endroit puisse exister.
</div>
<div>L’institution à but non lucratif a été fondée en 1981, contre la volonté du gouvernement israélien, et compte aujourd’hui 2 000 étudiants. Il s'agit d'une organisation ecclésiale, mais non confessionnelle, qui accueille des musulmans et des chrétiens palestiniens vivant en Israël. Ses 200 enseignants et collaborateurs sont chrétiens, musulmans et juifs. L’école a toujours bénéficié d’un soutien et de partenariats internationaux, mais connaît un manque de financement en raison des coupes budgétaires dues à la guerre actuelle, l’argent ayant été redirigé vers les dépenses militaires d’Israël.

<div>Même si je suis les événements mondiaux avec beaucoup d’intérêt, essayer d’aider cette école n’est pas une tentative de déclaration politique. C’est une question d’éducation. Au Canada, l'école est garantie et universelle. Ce n’est pas le cas dans de nombreuses autres régions du monde. De plus, je ne vois pas de meilleur moyen de construire une société plus tolérante qu’en commençant à l’école. Le fondement de Mar Elias est constitué par les Béatitudes de la Bible. Peut-être que vous les avez lus, peut-être pas. À mon avis, ça n’a pas d’importance que vous soyez pratiquant ou non. Le message « Traitez les gens comme vous souhaitez être traité » et « Aimez vos ennemis » est plus nécessaire que jamais, à une époque où nos médias et nos politiciens veulent nous faire peur et nous diviser plutôt que nous unir. Rien de plus important à apprendre aux enfants du Moyen-Est et du monde entier.
</div>
<div>L’école Mar Elias montre la voie. En effet, avec ce même message de non-violence et d'unité, Elias Chacour a été nominé trois fois pour le prix Nobel de la paix.
</div>
