WSL Thomo QS 1000

Bill Thomson, a Welsh transplant to Barbados in the 1960's, a keen rugby player and surfer, can be called the father of competitive surfing in Barbados.

Bill sadly left us in July 2017, leaving a void that will never be filled.

With the blessing of his family, several people got together in an effort to do something to honor Bill and his massive contribution to surfing in Barbados and his support for the international competitive efforts of Bajan surfers.

Those involved are:

Alan Burke, Barbados - Former Multiple National & International Surfing Champion ,coached and managed by Bill, current Chief Surf Instructor at Burkie Surf School in Barbados.

Andrew Lewis, Barbados - former Barbados National Surf Team member , 3rd place judge in the 1988 ISA World championships, and the longest serving executive committee member of the Barbados Surfing Association.

Bob Packer, USA - former boogieboard hellman, Barbados National Surf Team interpreter and owner of Signs Now Sunrise in Florida.

Sean Chandler, Canada - famous for breaking his nose twice with his own board, owner of several web-based businesses. Remembered by Bill and Ann as the kid to buy the brightest, loudest baggies in the store.

This campaign supports a fund-raising effort to hold a World Surf League Qualifying event in Barbados in BIll's name, beginning in 2017 and continuing annually thereafter, the event to be named "WSL Thomo QS 1000 in memory of Bill Thomson".

The organizers of the WSL Jr pro on Nov 9-12th 2017, (Surf Promotions (Barbados) Limited - Louis Venezia & Chris Clarke) have agreed to coincide the Thomo QS 1000 with the Juniors event, to consolidate cost & maximize use of JR pro infrastructure. They are on board 100%.

Hunter Joslin , Bill's longtime friend and pro surf contest commentator has agreed to come for the event. We feel that there is no one more appropriate to speak at an international surf event in Bill's memory.

Brian Robbins, the North American WSL tour manager, is fully supportive.

We need to raise around $15,000 USD to cover the cost of running the event, prizemoney, etc.

We're selling board and car decals as well as t-shirts to raise some of the money. We're hoping some local companies will come on board as well as named event sponsors.
