Who is Sail Able?
Sail Able Nova Scotia has been providing learn-to-sail opportunities for persons with disabilities for nearly 28 years. But the program really offers so much more!
What does this mean to our participants?
Sail Able provides so much to so many people. To some it is simply a fun distraction from the everyday stresses of life. For others it is a chance to learn and to prove to themselves and others that they are still capable of participating in life. Some participants use it as a way of challenging themselves through competition. In a world made for able bodies, a person with a disability rarely gets to feel strong and capable. Sail Able levels the playing field and allows any of us to learn, train and test our limits.
The confidence that Sail Able has given to its participants has put us in the unique position of now having more people with disabilities on our board then there are able bodied board members. So we truly are an organization run BY people with disabilities not just an organization run FOR people with disabilities.

What do we need from you?
We are looking for donations from you in order to replace our outdated sip and puff technology which has become very difficult to repair. Last year we had many participants who required this technology in order to sail, including 4 of our most competitive sailors. During the final sailing regatta our sip and puff technologies both malfunctioned, which meant that two of our sailors were not able to compete. This would be discouraging for any sailor but to our participants it was devastating! We want to provide equal opportunities to everyone but in order to do this we need our technology to do its job in levelling the playing field.
What is this technology?
The sip and puff technology allows for hands free sailing opportunities in our Martin 16s. Two small straws are attached to the sailor’s life jacket. The first straw controls the steering, by allowing the sailor to sip from the straw to turn right and to puff into the straw to turn left. The second straw controls a mechanical device known as the windlass, allowing them to position the sails. Sipping on the second straw brings the sail in, while puffing brings the sail out. This means that once the boat is rigged and they are transferred into the boat, any sailor with the proper training is able to be completely independent in sailing a Martin 16. And you cannot imagine the feeling of freedom this provides!
