Ride for Reconciliation

Donation protected
Taanishi,

My name is Liam and I am a Metis teacher from the Homeland of the Métis nation and Treaty 1 territory.  This spring, while finishing my Education degree at the University of Manitoba, the remains of 215 indigenous children were discovered near the school they were forced to attend.  Like countless others, the horror of this truth hit hard, and with it, an urgency to act.  I am embarking on a journey I call the Ride for Reconciliation, a non-profit event focused on the continued fight for truth and reconciliation for Indigenous peoples.  I will ride my bike over 7000 kms across Turtle Island, to all the recently discovered mass graves of the children that suffered at the hand of the residential schooling system.  To sit with this TRUTH.  To raise money and donate 100% of the profits to Indigenous organizations.  I hope others will join me.

The Ride begins September 7th--the first day of school.  As a teacher, I believe that schools are a place where healing from this trauma can begin to take place. As Murray Sinclair pointed out in reference to residential schools, "Education got us into this mess and education will get us out."  The Ride is taking place during the first month of school in hopes that it may serve as a catalyst to bring light to, and give space for, Indigenous issues within the classroom. For the people of Canada to understand the power education has to both promote wellness and deter wellness.

The Ride across Turtle Island will start on our homeland of Treaty 1 territory.  We will head West as far as Penelakut Island, and then head back East to the capital building in Ottawa.  The route, specifically, is as follows:

Winnipeg-> Brandon
Brandon -> Cowessess First Nation
Cowessess First Nation -> Muskowekwan
Muskowekwan -> Regina
Regina -> Fort Providence
Fort Providence -> Ktunaxa Nation
Ktunaxa Nation -> Kamloops
Kamloops -> Penelakut Island
Penelakut Island -> Ottawa

The goals of the Ride for Reconciliation are twofold.  First, I hope to promote truthful discussion and awareness in education—a real acknowledgment of the roles the Canadian government and the Catholic church committed in the atrocious genocide on the Indigenous peoples of Canada.  The Ride hopes to promote a truthful discussion of the inequities that Indigenous people face on their own lands. I invite fellow teachers to educate themselves and their students by looking for ways to engage in discussion, decolonize their classrooms, and to fight for equitable educational outcomes for all students.  Second, I hope to raise money for Indigenous groups who are fighting for Indigenous people and their sacred land.

Ride for Reconciliation believes in solidarity between settlers and Indigenous people!
