Ride For Paul in Miami

Hi, my name is Scott. Last year, one of my dearest friends from childhood, Paul was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), also known in the USA as ALS.

For those unfamiliar, MND is a Neuro Degenerative Disease (NDD) which prevents the central nervous system from sending signals to motor neurones, which are critical to the movement and control of limbs. For 50% of sufferers, life expectancy from diagnosis is less than 3 years and the disease will gradually impact movement, speech, and the ability to breathe unaided.

Paul is 46, and married with 2 children. He is trying to raise money for treatment, and also to look after his family in the future.

To help him with this, I am doing a bike ride to help raise funds. I live in Miami, and coincidentally that's where Paul travels to from Ireland to access his treatment. His favourite place in Miami is Coconut Grove, so it seemed appropriate to use that as the starting point for my ride.

The route from Coconut Grove to the lighthouse at Key Biscayne is approx. 15 miles, and I intend to do as many laps of that as I can on Sat. Dec. 3rd 2022. I don't want to make any promises on how many I will complete, because although I am changing this, 2 years ago I was in a dire situation battling depression and food addiction. Around this time, I bought a bike and struggled to do 3 miles on it, such was my condition.

Thankfully that is no longer my story today. Paul's endless positivity and bravery in the face of this disease, and his 'never-give-up' attitude has been an inspiration to me and many others.
