My dad, Ric Yost, was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) February 2015. Though we have been lucky that he has had a slower form of the disease, it is progressing. In February 2017 he was forced into early retirement due to the effects. This has caused my parents financial hardship. My siblings and I have been helping as much as we can but have limits, too. We have had other family and friends helping, and it has been greatly appreciated. With this help and the selling of my dad’s work tools and equipment things are still hard.
In August 2017 we found out there was a new treatment with great results coming from Japan, it wouldn't be available until December. My Dad's ALS specialist told him he was a great candidate so he moved forward with the forms for treatment and financial assistance. Once the papers were filed he was informed they would need to pay $6,500. This is what is holding my dad back from starting this treatment.
My Dad started losing use of his hand, this is what lead us to his diagnoses of ALS. It has been three years and things are getting worse. He now uses a walker to get anywhere in the house or with in short distance. If he needs to go a longer distances he uses a power chair. Eating is starting to become a challenge, he has choked a few times. Talking is getting harder also.
