Hotel bathrooms like this one are just one example of spaces that are not accessible, even when they try to be. I want to help create change so situations like this "would be nice if I could reach the taps" don't happen.
My goal is to be one of the first people in Ontario to be a RHFAC Program Certified Accessibility Specialist. The Rick Hansen Foundation is training people to use a rating system to determine the accessibility of all types of buildings; commercial, institutional, and multi-family residential buildings. Once rated, a building can be certified and use that certification to promote their space.
Currently, the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification Program is only being offered at Vancouver Community College in BC. The next two-week course is at the beginning of April and I intend to be there! I am using donated Air Canada points to get there, but I will need to pay for accessible accommodations and travel in Vancouver for two weeks.
I’d like your help. My goal is to fundraise $4500 which will cover accommodations, travel to and from VCC each day for two weeks and the cost of the course ($998.48).
By helping me reach my goal, you will also be helping create a more accessible Huron County. I will return with knowledge and skills and to launch Sawchuk Accessibility Specialists - as an RHFAC professional accessibility assessor. Upon successfully completing the CSA standards exam, I will be able to help both public and privately owned spaces comply with legislation, Universal Design standards and best practices for accessibility for all.
In Canada, accessibility legislation is changing. More importantly, the public’s awareness and understanding has improved. People are seeing the need for inclusive spaces so people with disabilities can live with dignity and independence.
