Remodel for Rick and Shirley

Donation protected
On August 26th, 2014 the Mendoza family lives were changed forever.  While driving to work Rick lost control of his truck and was thrown from the vehicle.  He was later transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska where he underwent an eight hour surgery to repair four broken vertebrae.  Other injuries included broken ribs and lacerations on his head and neck.  After surgery Rick gained limited mobility in his legs.  He was then transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.  During his stay at the rehab center Rick has learned to become more independent despite his wheelchair.  With the help of his loving wife, Shirley, he has learned to transfer himself from bed to wheelchair and to their vehicle.

Shirley has been by Rick’s side since the accident learning to care for him.  Often family members would find Shirley sleeping next to Rick’s hospital bed or going to all of his therapy sessions educating herself on ways to care of him.

Saturday, November 1st, 2014 Rick will be released from the hospital.  Rick’s kids and family members have been working feverishly to get the house ready for his return.  The family does need help funding the remodel of their bathroom.  The bathroom needs to be wheelchair accessible.

Before the accident Rick worked as a contractor.  He was often seen helping his four children remodel their homes or playing with his seven grandchildren outside.  Shirley is a devote Christian.  She has helped many family members in her community with health care, food, and clothing.  She also volunteers in her church, the First Assembly of God in Phillipsburg.
