Rick's Miracle Rehabilitation Fund

December 29th, 2015 was one of the worst days our family has ever experienced. It was the day we found my brother Rick in his apartment where he lay waiting for 3 days for someone to rescue him after he suffered a massive stroke.

Rick and I talked on the 26th, confirming he would be at my place for Christmas dinner. As a bachelor he went to Ottawa to spend Christmas day with our parents, sister Elaine and brother Mike and his family. Then he would join my family for our dinner back in Kingston/Napanee on whatever date we planned. Rick’s 15 first and great nieces and nephews have always loved when their Uncle Rick arrived to spend hours chasing and tickling them. That year my dinner was December 29th. My 7 grandkids were pretty excited to see him. When he didn't answer my texts or calls earlier that day it was no big deal since he wasn't typically quick to reply. But when he didn't show up at 4pm then 5, my son Andrew offered to check on him. Everything after that moved in slow motion and high speed at the same time. It's hard to explain but those of you who have been through a similar horrific event would understand. During the first few days he was not expected to live.

Rick spent a month in KGH where the prognosis was not good but he beat the odds! Followed by 7 months in St. Mary's hospital where he worked hard on his rehabilitation. After almost 3 years, at the age of 53, Rick still has not regained his speech and is paralyzed on his right side. He has no use of his right arm and is mostly wheelchair bound but can walk short distances with a quad cane.

Recently we were presented with a life changing opportunity for Rick. A treatment so promising that it could not be ignored. Someone in the home where Rick lives showed him a 60 Minutes episode. It was about a new treatment that helped a school teacher, with very similar after stroke limitations as Rick, recover fully. She is walking and talking again!!

The treatment is expensive and controversial and there is a small chance it may not work BUT there IS a CHANCE that it WILL and my brother will walk and talk again.

Since Rick wants this with every fiber of his being, we are determined to give him this opportunity. Rick is scheduled for the treatment on October 26th at the Institute of Neurological Recovery in Boca Raton, Florida. We will leave on the 25th, treatment is at 3pm on the 26th and we are believing we will return with a walking talking brother, son, uncle and friend!

We are excited beyond words but we need your help financially. The treatment costs (depending on exchange rate) close to $10,000 cad and because of his special needs, travel expenses will be much more costly.

If you are able to help, thank you so much. We are eternally grateful! And please send your thoughts and prayers to Rick on October 26th.
