Rick Murrell, Greensboro Fire Engineer

Rick Murrell, A 33-year veteran of the Greensboro Fire Department, tragically passed away on Saturday, July 9th, due to an off-duty traffic accident during a storm. (WXII News Story)

Rick leaves behind a loving wife struggling to recover from her own injuries resulting from the accident and three children. Please consider a donation to support their medical bills and financial needs as they work to adjust to life without Rick.

Rick Murrell was a universally respected member of the Greensboro Fire Department, an Army veteran, a devoted husband, and a loving and supportive father of three exceptional children.

Rick’s impact and positive influence within the GFD are immeasurable. He was a senior trusted member of Station 5 and one of the most respected Engineers on the job. As a member of Greensboro’s urban search and rescue team, he was deployed several times throughout the state for swift water rescue operations.

In 2018, WXII covered the GFD swift water response to Pender County during Hurricane Florence. Rick was interviewed during this coverage upon the team's return to Greensboro and told WXII this:

“We were just down there two years ago for Matthew, and it wasn’t even a question when they came and asked us, ‘Do you want to go back?’ They didn’t even have to ask us. We all volunteered to go.”

That's who Rick was- always ready and willing to stand in the gap for others.

100% of your donation will go directly to the family via the Greensboro Fire Fighters Charitable Fund managed by Professional Fire Fighters of Greensboro. Thank you for your donation.
