Richmond Students to Music Camp

In the past three years the Richmond High School Band program has seen a growth in membership from 8 to 40. We are on track to have potentially 70 students next year. The revitalized program has grown to have Marching, Symphonic, Concert, and Jazz band. Last year our musicians made up the pit band for our RHS musical for the first time in over thirty years. Our school is Title One and is 90% free and reduced lunch.
The amount of growth the music program has gone through is amazing, but it is nothing in comparison to the growth I have seen in my students. Music is more than a class for many of these Richmond students. It is a safe place for them to go everyday. Where they are allowed to express themselves and escape the noise outside of the band room walls.
The band program is also a vessel to show our students what lies beyond their current view and interact with people from different backgrounds. For the past two summers we have sent a handful of our students to La Honda Music in the Santa Cruz mountains to gain experience and insight. At music camp students live in cabins in the redwoods for a week, attend six music classes everyday, have various night activities throughout the week, and have a big concert to end the week. The staff are some of the finest music educators and musicians in the country. I can not began to express the benefit going to camp had on my students and even the band program as a whole.
This year instead of just sending my section leaders to camp I figured I would ask the band and see how many students would want to go. We ended up having 19 students interested in attending. Music camp is $750 for each student for the week. Please help support the Richmond High School Band music camp scholarship fund!
