Ricardo Lopez Memorial Fund

On Saturday, March 2, 2019 Ricardo Lopez was driving across the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, ID. His car went off the road and Ricardo died at the scene of the accident. His leaving this world so abruptly is one of those events that forces us to wonder why. Why now at such a young age? Why when he only had to complete one course in physical chemistry to receive his undergraduate degree? Why in such a harmless looking accident? Why when he was looking forward to having his younger sister join him at the University of Idaho this coming fall semester? Why when his life looked so full of promise? Why did this happen to such a wonderful person? Why Ricardo? So many whys, but no good answers.

Ricardo worked for me in environmental and organic soil chemistry at the University of Idaho. He was exceptionally hard working, extremely competent, and a pleasure to be around. I enjoyed him immensely. I knew he had significant student loans, an amount that he described to me as “quite a bit”. Ricardo was one of eight children. As he was the first to go to college, he viewed it his responsibility to act as a role model for his brothers and sisters. He was indeed an outstanding role model.

Last week I had to shut down a piece of equipment that was drying samples- samples Ricardo carefully placed in trays and slid into the chamber a day before his accident. I was flooded with emotions of disbelief and denial. How could Ricardo be here one day and gone the next? Why isn’t he here to take out the samples? Again, more questions but no answers.

This Go Fund Me page won’t provide any answers to these questions, but it will provide at least a small sign to his family that people cared deeply about Ricardo and that he will be missed.

The following text was written by a co-worker.

“Ricardo frequently spoke of his family as they were clearly important to him. He was a genuine person and someone you could always rely on. He did everything with a smile and positive attitude. It did not matter what you asked Ricardo to help with, he would always find a way to help you – it was evident that he cared about people around him. While Ricardo was majoring in chemistry, he was interested in many subjects. He had a passion for languages and was learning German and Russian. He was interested in glassblowing and welding, and was planning to take an archery class this fall. Ricardo will be missed."

Funds will be used by the Lopez family to defray funeral costs, pay off educational debts, and depending our success, help Ricardo’s brother and sisters continue their educations.
