On July 31st, my daughter Rhonda received a call from her dermatologist saying that was was thought to be a routine mole removal, came back as a rare and concerning type of cancer called a Desmoplastic melanoma. Because it was in a close proximity to her eye, the original doctor wanted her to see specialists in Boston at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute .
Currently her team at Dana-Farber consists of surgical and medical oncologists, a radiologist, and a plastic surgeon for facial reconstruction. After a second surgery to take more margins around the original site, her cancer was officially diagnosed as Stage II. However, after a PET scan, it was revealed that there are possibly malignant cells in her right breast. We are currently waiting for more tests to be done to determine whether or not the spot is cancerous. From that point, it will be determined what additional treatment, like a possible month long stay in Boston for radiation or immunology, will be needed.
Rhonda is insured through her work at Pen Bay pediatrics and it will help cover a large portion of the medical expenses, but she still has a high deductible and all the expenses to go along with traveling back and forth to Boston sometimes two times a week. Rhonda and her boyfriend Matt, who has been driving her back and forth to her appointments, have both lost time at work and so have lost wages.
My daughter has gone through so much and is so strong. She has always jumped to help friends and family in need, and now it's time for us to help return the favor.
