Help me to "Care" in South Africa!

Donation protected
I have loved animals my whole life.
I don't think that there was ever a time in my life when I wasn't surrounded by and helping animals. I was so enamoured by them, that by the ripe old age of 7 I decided to become a vegetarian because I didn't want to see animals killed to feed me. I am still a vegetarian today, going on 11 years. Also at age 7, I decided that I wanted to be a Veterinarian. I have been a regular volunteer at the Burlington Animal Shelter since that time - walking and playing with the dogs, socializing cats, rabbits, ferrets, rats and other animals as they arrived, cleaning cages and on several occasions fostering litters of kittens in my home for weeks/months at a time. I have also had an ongoing walking/caring-for relationship with many doggie friends in my home over the past 6 years.

For the past year, I have been volunteering with the Livingston Animal Hospital in Grimsby, assisting Dr. Burmeister with triage, examinations and ongoing patient care. I have been so lucky to be gaining this invaluable on-the-job experience. I will be graduating from Grade 12 shortly and have been accepted to the University of Guelph this fall for my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, after which I will pursue my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Animals and their care is my passion and it is what I have chosen to devote my life to.

I am thrilled to announce that I have been accepted as a volunteer for a portion of this summer at the "Khulula Care for Wild" animal rehabilitation centre in the heart of the bush of SOUTH AFRICA!

At Khulula, volunteers focus on caring for and rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife back into their natural environment. The Centre works closely with local communities in relocating and treating injured wildlife. As a volunteer I will be responsible for the routine care of the animals (including Rhinos, Hippos, White Lions, Antelope etc.!!!) maintenance of the enclosures and nursing injured and orphaned wildlife. While there, I will also be able to benefit from detailed lectures on the theory behind hand rearing and infant care, where the hand rearing of birds, antelopes, cats, primates, rhino and elephants will be discussed. Amazing!

The internationally recognized centre is funded almost entirely through the contributions of international volunteers. Apart from supporting the centre financially, I will also lend much needed hands-on assistance. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will provide me with priceless experience for my future career aspirations.

I would love to experience all that this opportunity has to offer but I really need your help. There is a cost involved with this learning adventure - costs for my lodging, food, travel insurance, some medical inoculations and flights. Costs that I cannot afford to pay for by myself, especially with the fact that I have been saving for and begin University in the fall. Any help that you can offer me would be gratefully accepted - whether your donation is large or small, it is sooooo appreciated and it will help me to get to South Africa where I am looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and immersing myself in the work while learning and helping.

For those of you that may be concerned about making an online donation - please know that my parents and I have researched this site carefully - it is very reputable and safe. If you are still nervous about it however and prefer the personal approach, please feel free to contact me directly, I would love to hear from you!

If you have any questions about my plans, my trip or the organization, please feel free to contact me directly. My family will be helping me to organize some additional fundraising events and as details of these become available, I will update this site with the information so that you can help me to spread the word!
