Burial Services

We are the family of Thelia Ashley, a wonderful, kind 78 yr old lady from Nicaragua who married our brother Darryll in 1971.  She came here to be a doctor, which she was considered in Nicaragua, only to learn she would have to start from scratch on education and had no funds to do so.  So she worked as a Nurse in physical therapy for 40 years supporting her husband's efforts to be an artist.

Darryll Ashley was an incredible artistic talent, who for many years worked as protege to Marshall Fredericks, the world-renowned sculptor who created Spirit of Detroit and hundreds of other famous 'giant' sculptures.  Darryll, (armed with only his renderings and a few small pieces of intricate works he created) knocked on Marshall's door around 1985 and was immediately commissioned to produce all of Marshall's miniaturized versions, as well as to 'design/create' gifts for the King of Prussia, Joan Kroc and many other high-profile friends of Marshall.
Prior to this, Darryll worked directly for Minoru Yamasaki at the time he was designing the original World Trade Center Towers.
While his talent was remarkable and credentials impeccable, he never made more than a very modest living from his efforts and being obsessed with his artwork, the financial responsibility to provide for the family fell on Thelia.  She spent 40+ years between Mt Carmel and Providence Hospital group and cared for our ailing father during her off-hours, when he became too feeble to manage his own personal needs.
Darryll, toiling away in his basement, naively lost all of his financial security (and his wife's).   Following a broken hip/fall in April'18, he has spent last 6 months in hospital, rehab, hospital, rehab each time thinking he was about to come home.  Then two weeks ago was diagnosed with two kinds of aggressive cancer in stomach and Liver.  Within a week, he was placed in Hospice and Sunday 9/30/18 he passed.
We have already purchased a dependable used car for Thelia, (they've had no car for 18 months) and we are now trying to raise money for his funeral expenses and to protect Thelia's ability to stay in the small family home, in Berkley.   She is 78 years old and only just retired five years ago, due to back issues (but was ruled ineligible for worker's comp).  Thelia is a saint, who has been dealt a very bad hand in life. We are each doing what we can to help her move on, but her situation is dire.
