Rez Girls 64 Hockey Team Photos

Hello, we're Katie and Steve Koopman, owners of Unveiled Photography based out of Kingston, Ontario. In late 2017 we were moved by a CBC radio documentary highlighting the challenges faced by the 'Rez Girls 64' hockey team from Eabametoong First Nation, also known as Fort Hope, in Northern Ontario. The team and their coaching staff struggled to find ice time, obtain equipment and funding to travel to a tournament in Thunder Bay but were ultimately successful. Their story, photos, and audio can be found here: CBC Radio 'The Doc Project' Article and Audio on Rez Girls 64

However, their next task was to raise funds to fly all the way to Ottawa, confirm accommodation, and participate in the 35th Kanata Girls Hockey Association House League Tournament occurring March 23-25, 2018.

This year the cost is $110,000 because the tournament is so much further away. Thankfully, and only until recently, the team once again received the funding needed to participate.

After hearing CBC’s coverage of the Rez Girls’ journey, and thoroughly moved by the determination of the young women leading this team to have their players experience what we all want for our children, we reached out to offer our photography services. The Rez Girls 64 accepted and we are honoured.

We will document their games at the tournament at the end of March, take their team picture, individual portraits, and will offer a photo booth one evening for fun. We want to build these young girls up in a small way. We want to provide memories for the parents who cannot afford to travel with their child. We want to provide a warm welcome from another part of their province.

While we are covering all of our time, meals, and accommodation (thank you Mel and J.D.) we really wanted to give something tangible and special to the girls as a lasting memory of their time in Ottawa. This is where we are asking friends, family, and community members to help raise funds to provide each of the 18 players a custom hockey portrait mounted to an aluminum backing with a metallic finish. The cost for an 8x10 print with shipping to Eabametoong First Nation will be at least $50 per player. That is why we have started our goal out at $1,000. If we are blessed enough to exceed our target than the size of the portraits can be increased as well.

Thank you in advance to all of those who are so generous to participate in this endeavour to ensure these wonderful and resilient young girls are provided with a cherished keepsake of a time and an event in their lives that they will be sure to never forget.
