Hello all, What is happening? For an Atlantic Salmon to spawn, they must trek from the Ocean, to the upper reaches of Coastal Rivers. This perilous migration exposes these beautiful fish to birds, bears, falls and other obstacles. Aside from those natural hurdles, human development is the greatest threat to their migration due to the construction of Dams. There are 73,000 Dams over 3 feet high in American rivers alone. What was originally thought to be a green source of energy has had extreme unforeseen effects to Salmon populations nationwide and nearly displaced all of them from Maine’s rivers.   The Atlantic Salmon need you! How can we help? I am selling my handmade woodworking through this fundraiser to support the revival of Salmon population. All money raised will advance critical work done by the nonprofit “Maine Rivers.” Maine Rivers is the only statewide advocacy for rivers in Maine. The fish beneath my canoe seemed to be a wonder of the world once I heard about their long journey. Nature’s path to reproduction led them from the vast ocean up the very same pools they spawned from. Filling their gills with freshwater is a transition I can only imagine to be discomforting. In front of them, hundreds of miles of river to navigate, a journey impossible to foresee. Additionally, they must climb hundreds of feet and traverse through nature’s unpredictability. These are all incredible feats alone, and unfathomable when considering an arduous current that runs against them. Where do they find the stamina, spirit, and power needed? Despite gravity, they find the will to rise over rocks, jump ledges, and surge over falls. This incredible journey is all in effort to spawn the next generation of these beautiful fish. In my life, I have come to revere these characteristics and can only hope the next generation is able to appreciate them the way I have. Thank you for your time and help,   Jared Nolan
