Retirement Dowry for the Elderly Broodmares

Hi everyone. Some of you know that for the past 3 months, some friends of mine and I have been helping another friend to rehome 26 of her husband's horses after he had an accident and was no longer able to care for them. This was quite a project as many of them needed some health rehab, vet visits, farrier visits, and a lot of TLC. We have had many kind and generous volunteers step up to help with their daily care as well as many kind and generous folks step up to provide these horses with the good homes they deserve.

Unfortunately, the farm has to be sold to pay for our friend's care and all of the horses need to go.

Old horses who have slowed down over the years and may have some chronic injuries/disease are often not valued as the loving and lovable animals they still are. They can often be managed and live a happy life with a bit more care from the vet and some better quality food. They just need someone to love and care for them. Many would suggest that we simply put them down and that is certainly an option, but not one we want to make for them yet.

I've had these girls evaluated by the vet and she thinks that they can continue to live good quality lives, but would need someone to be looking after them who will interact with and pay attention to their needs. I started to lose home because this is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Not many people are able to take on the expense and attention that adopting elderly horses require.

But then a miracle occurred.

Someone has stepped up and these lovely girls have a forever home. She has been fully vetted by the animal rescue we've been working with and she has gotten rave reviews. Hopefully she will be taking these girls home in the next few weeks. It may not be for long, but they can continue to live and be loved for at least a few more years with a person who values them for who they are, not what they can do.

We have managed to pay for most of the horses' care and feed by selling items off the farm and getting generous donations from individuals. The NC State Vet School generously provided us with shots and coggins for all of the horses as well as castrated the stallions so they could finally live a good life with other horses.

Taking on two older horses is a bit of a financial burden and so I'd like to ask one more time for the generosity of the community to raise some money to help their new owner provide them with the care they will need for the next few years. Although we hope it doesn't happen any time soon, please keep in mind that when their time comes, euthanasia and removal of their bodies can cost up to $1000 per horse.

Only contribute if you want to and the amount you can afford to give. We are so very grateful for the help this herd has already received and look forward to hearing how they are all doing for many years to come.
