Restoring The Little River/Upstream Watch
Donation protected
The Little River is a pristine river on the coast of Maine and is currently the home of two obsolete and crumbling dams. Upstream Watch is working toward the removal of these dams and the full restoration of the Little River and the return of Alewives, Atlantic Salmon, Sturgeon, Shad and all and any migratory fish. Unfortunately, while we were in the planning stages of this effort, a large international conglomerate, Nordic Aquafarms, has proposed a land-based fish farm on the banks of this river. This Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) salmon project will encompass over 45 acres of buildings and parking lots and will discharge 7.7 million gallons/day of wastewater into the Penobscot Bay. Nordic has indicated that they need these crumbling dams in order to obtain the 631 million gallons/year of fresh water they need to raise their fish. Clearly this proposed project has complicated our efforts and raised serious environmental concerns. Your donation will enable us to conduct the due diligence required in our efforts to question the fish farm proposal and seek a viable alternative solution for Nordic Aquafarms current configuration.
