Poultry Program for Afghan Women

NEI’s home poultry business program for village women started last year as a pilot project for 200 women and this year, has expanded to include 2,000 Afghan women.

Afghan women, especially widows, have limited employment opportunities and almost none if they are illiterate.

Empowering Afghan women to create these “backyard” poultry businesses increases their status in a way that is culturally acceptable as they become the primary or sole income earners as female heads of households.

Women reported that their improved status has given them hope where before they stated they were depressed and felt completely powerless to make any positive change.

Now, many of the women are building a second coop with the profits they made and report a better quality of life for themselves and their children, a great achievement for these successful businesswomen and a testament to NEI’s dedication to women’s empowerment in Afghanistan.

**Bibi Halima (picture above), one of 100 rural women being trained by NEI’s poultry experts, took a very innovative step and built a poultry farm inside her yard for which she made a small egg hatching incubator from a damaged refrigerator.  By doing so, she produced more than 150 small chicks. “Thanks to NEI, I can now send my children to school and support my family” Ms. Halima said.



With $50, 5 poor village women can start poultry faming with 15 laying hens and supplies.
