Restore Hope for Kasese Flood Victims

I am reaching out to all my friends, friends of my friends and all who will read this.

 I am seeking your support to help the people of Kasese, my home district in Uganda, where a series of heavy rain have caused five rivers to flood, killing people, washing away homes, crops, businesses, a major hospital, fifteen schools, roads, bridges, a hydro power plant, boreholes, as if to add injury to an already hopeless situation during this Covid-19 lock down.

I personally know some of the families that have been displaced. Some have sought temporary shelter with relatives, others are distressed in IDPC camps (Internally Displaced Person Camps) wondering where and how they will restart their lives.

In May 2019, I had the opportunity to visit and appreciate Kilembe Mines Hospital where my grandfather was hospitalized for an extended period of time before he passed on. I was proud of the development at this facility, the health care team, and its extent of operation, taking and treating patients of all kinds. This Hospital was completely destroyed by boulder sized rocks and raging waters from river Nyamwamba.

Their pharmacy, hospital equipment and mortuary were washed away. The hospital is no longer functional on site but has sought temporary housing in a space provided by the Catholic Diocese. This is a major facility that serves a population of more than four million people.

The hunger, disease and deepening levels of poverty that will result from this catastrophic disaster will be devastating.

Right now, people need food- their gardens, crops and livestock were destroyed. They need household items for daily use and medication. Others need help to restart their small businesses.  
The hospital needs emergency supplies so that they can continue to treat those who are ill as they figure out a long term plan for rebuilding the hospital.

I know that these are challenging times for everyone around the world but I feel a deep and painful need to kindly ask those who can, to consider contributing to help the people of Kasese to rebuild themselves from this disaster.
