I lavori restanti ammontano a 70.000 euro.

Teatro della Contraddizione (“TDC”) is an independently run theatre based in Milan, Italy. It may close permanently on July 29th.
Covid-19 is not the cause, although it has certainly made the situation worse.
Rather, the laws of the Italian State are responsible for the danger in which TDC suddenly finds itself.

Teatro della Contraddizione is a registered “cultural association”, a 99 seat theatre space operating for the past twenty years in the historic district of Porta Romana, Milan.
TDC is in every sense a grassroots project. It is a theatre which receives no public funds, has no cultural partners or political sponsors, and exists in complete defiance of any economic imperative, or indeed logic.  TDC exists thanks only to the passion and lucid madness of all the utopian idealists who have entered its doors for the past 20 years; be they artists, technicians, or spectators.
We have always put our artistic and social function ahead of everything (including ourselves) and always with a key idea in mind: a theatre must work for the common good. Meanwhile official institutions regularly remind us that art must be, above everything, a successful commercial enterprise. So, it is grimly ironic that we have been convicted of an “abusive exercise in running a public entertainment activity”. We feel compelled to ask: what could be more absurd than accusing us, idealists and utopians, of being entrepreneurs?

So what exactly happened? In Italy we are not allowed to operate as an officially recognised theatre. For bureaucratic purposes, we have to go under the banner of “Cultural Association”. By law, a spectator must be a member of our cultural association and have a membership card in advance of buying a ticket. One evening we welcomed two undercover police officers, posing as spectators, into our theatre and gave them each a membership card for our cultural association, so that they could buy a ticket and attend the play we were presenting that same evening. All the other spectators in attendance (i.e. the real ones) were already registered in our database, as required by law. Of course, the policemen had nothing personal to do with this, they were just doing their job.

We were immediately charged and subsequently found guilty by the courts. For simply selling a ticket to our show, we are now required to carry out building renovations, to the amount of 70,000 Euros. If we don’t carry out the work and produce the required certifications by the 29th July we will be closed down permanently. On top of that we will also receive a heavy fine.

That sort of money is impossible for us. We have approached numerous institutions, but none has offered to come to our aid. It is important to note that ours is not an isolated situation. Rather, it is a systemic one. In Italy, all cultural associations operate underneath a Sword of Damocles: a single person, a single complaint, a single official visit, is enough to make it collapse. Everybody knows this, of course: inspectors, police officers, public institutions, local administrations. Yet everything is left to the arbitrariness of the individual municipal councils. Everybody turns a blind eye, so as to avoid taking responsibility for giving a collective response to a social need: the exercise of cultural activity, freely and democratically.
In the contemporary world, economic barriers now constitute censorship. Stringent and suffocating health and safety regulations which restrict a small theatres from operating, create a selection of species: only the richest among us can afford to operate the smallest and poorest of  cultural activities. It is well known that big theatres receive most of their income from public funding (i.e. funds provided from the community, via taxation). However only the wealthiest among us can afford to buy a ticket, given the exorbitant prices. It is clear that the responsibility does not lie with the theatres but, rather, stems from the insufficient funds provided by the state. In other words, those who cannot afford to go to the theatre end up subsidising those who can afford to go. This is paradoxical, but this is reality.
We believe in plurality. It is a great thing that wealth is invested in culture. But all cultural spaces must be heard and represented. And when we talk about representation, we are not only referring to the voices of those who manage these spaces, but also the many voices of their public.

We have waited until the very last minute to make this announcement, in the hope that we could come up with a different solution. But time is running out and we must act. That is why we have decided to turn to our community to ask for help. This is the most unpleasant decision we have ever made: launch a call for help when so many of us are at grave risk and every one of us is somehow in trouble. For 20 years we have been trying to get institutional help. We have struggled and we have exploited ourselves. We have come so far, and we have reached some of our goals, but it is now clear that, in order to continue to exist, we can no longer walk alone. Even if that is what we have always believed in, as an independent cultural venue.
We do not think it is fair to find ourselves in this position now, asking for an extraordinary gesture on your part, a gesture that can save us. This should not happen after 20 years of hard work for the community. Unfortunately, we have no choice.
