Restaurants everywhere are facing indefinite closures and a free-fall in sales. Cooks, bartenders, servers, and small business owners will bear the heaviest brunt of these hard times. Help the people who make our communities a special place to eat and go out stay on their feet - donate today.
The restaurants of Madison, Milwaukee, and Wisconsin as a whole represent one of the most culturally diverse, high quality, and flourishing food scenes in the nation. With an abundance of high quality produce, a closely-knit network of farmers, artisan producers, and chefs, and a community of food-loving diners, the restaurants of Wisconsin support not only a large chunk of our state’s economy, but our culture as well.
In the last 24 hours, a vast majority of these restaurants have been ordered to close their doors due to the rise of COVID-19. Many of these restaurants will never open their doors again. Our industry runs on razor thin margins and we need people at our tables to survive, which leaves employees of such establishments in an incredibly vulnerable place. Many lack health insurance necessary for meds, many will be unable to meet rent in the next couple of weeks, or pay utility bills, or shop for groceries to feed their family - and many more have already been laid off of their jobs entirely. This is cause for major fear and anxiety in an industry where few hourly employees make more than a living wage.
Our industry is notorious for a chip on your shoulder, do it yourself, never-ask-for-help attitude, but now we must do just that - lean on the community that we live to feed, serve and clean up after - and ask for your help to keep these employees afloat. We will prioritize workers who do not have immediate access to other forms of aid, and hope to distribute funds quickly and fairly. I’ve worked in restaurants in both Madison and Milwaukee, and the stability and support of people who make up this scene are incredibly important to me. The funds that have been raised will be distributed to those restaurant workers who’ve applied for aid via our online Google form - funds will be distributed via Venmo, PayPal, or Cashapp according to the applicant’s preference.
