Restaurant Worker Relief Fund

As you know we are in uncertain times, and many of us are taking the precautions at home and at work to prepare for what can only be described as a crisis in light of the coronavirus and the threat of covid-19 pandemic.

We are reaching out on behalf of a group of hardworking individuals in Michigan, who do not have those provisions or agency to be able to take off work if they are sick. Many restaurant workers work multiple part-time jobs in order to make a living, but most of their employers do not offer earned paid sick time--So they either go to work sick or don’t get paid. Hundreds of thousands of folks, who help make our lives more comfortable every day through making and serving our food are facing unpredictable and precarious work situations. We have over 160,000 tipped workers in Michigan, many only making only $3.52/hour. A majority of restaurant workers are  women, people of color, and immigrants who are more likely to experience compounding precariousness because of their marginalized status and the nature of their employment.

Take for example, Melissa, who until March 14 was employed at a local restaurant. Although she was scheduled for 30 hours a week, she rarely actually got that many hours, making it difficult to earn a sustainable wage. Her employer is behind on pay, and she is owed tips. Because of the current health crisis the restaurant has been slow, which has affected her income in the last few weeks. Last night, because of her attempts to receive the pay she was owed, she was sent off the floor by her manager and now finds herself without a job. She is now facing unpredictable circumstances amidst an international crisis. Help us help workers like Melissa who are suffering from unpredictable work, unlivable wages, and illegal business practices!

Please donate today so that we can provide needed support and resources to our hardworking restaurant workers in Michigan!
