My mother, Iris, is a warrior.
In 2004, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and since then she fought the disease with every fiber in her body despite being a single mother to 3 children. Her number one priority was always her children. However, she was also so committed to others. She gave even when she did not have, she would show up to support you even if she was in pain, and she prayed the kind of prayers that as my cousin said "was what you needed on those days when you forgot what God sounded like."
Throughout her 13 year long battle, she survived two spinal cord surgeries and a handful of other invasive surgeries, a plethora of chemotherapy and radiation sessions, endless hospital visits, and hundreds of days in pain. But even in her hospital bed, she never cried, not once and she always said, "If I'm not crying, why should you?" She remained steadfast in her belief in God and trusted Him until the very end.
My mother always said she was not going to give up because she wanted to be there to continue raising my sisters and I. But in these last few weeks, the disease moved faster than she could, quickly overcoming her body. It started with the constant pain, then she couldn't walk as she was paralyzed from the waist down, and then she became so fatigued she could barely talk. And she finally said to me, "Baby, I'm tired of fighting. I'm ready to go." I had never heard her say these words and because of this, I understood that God was calling for his angel to come home. And on November 3rd, 2017, she became His angel.
My mom deserved the world, because she gave everyone her world. I always imagined that one day I would provide my mother the American Dream that eluded her, and in the mean time I gave her all the love that I could. So I want to give her the best send off possible, for the best person I've ever known.
All funds raised will be used to cover the associated funeral and burials costs in the USA, and our traditional Cameroonian ceremonies such as the wake keeping costs and costs associated for my grandparents to travel back to Cameroon to do an additional traditional ceremony.
There truly is no ceremony that could ever properly comemorate the life of unconditional love, sacrafice, selflessness, and courage that my mother lived in her short 47 years, but I will certainly make sure we give her the best. She more than deserves it.
