Rest In Heaven Devon Handy

Donation protected
I never thought I’d have to do anything like this in my life. Yesterday, my family lost a big piece of our hearts. My brother Devon “D. Handy” Handy was called home. For the last few years, he’s been battling with serious health issues. Through it all, he stayed strong for his family, for his children & for his friends. A few months ago he underwent valve replacement surgery and the doctor’s thought he wouldn’t make it. After his surgery exceeding 5 hours, we knew something was wrong. The surgeon’s exact words still replay in my head, “I expect the worse. I hope for the best. I hope he survives this.” He was sedated for 2 days and they didn’t wake him his heart didn’t go into shock. During that time he ended up losing circulation in his left leg & had to go back into surgery. They cut his left leg from the knee down on both sides in hopes of saving his leg. Thank God they found the clot and he did not become an amputee. But, that surgery changed his life beyond his heart issues. That was the start of his struggle with walking, with living, with continuing to fight. He had to practice walking to improve it, but it was a huge strain on his heart making it almost impossible. Despite his circumstances, Devon fought a good fight and he made sure everybody knew he loved them in the process of his struggles. As sick as he was he didn’t show it fully so people were always shocked when they found out just how sick he was. Little did they know his heart was functioning at 15%, he took over a dozen different medications several times a day, he would get winded just walking to the car for appointments, he passed out falling to the concrete many times trying to do therapy his self-walking the sidewalk outside, he had trouble breathing & sleeping every single night. & he would cry almost daily because he felt helpless. Little did they know many nights he was afraid to sleep because he feared he wouldn’t wake up again. Yet, when friends or family would call or pay him a visit, he would light up. Despite his pain, he was still up laughing and joking with the people he loved & who genuinely loved him. I thank all of you who took the time to show him love and light these last few months from the bottom of my heart & the depths of my soul.

Today, we are faced with making funeral arrangements for a funeral we can not afford. It hurts me to say that my family doesn’t have the means for a proper burial to lay him to rest. These last few months we spent our savings trying to keep him alive & now he’s gone. I ask that you keep my family in your prayers at this time as we grieve & mourn. I don’t know if our pain will ever subside, but knowing that he was loved by so many gives me peace.

Devon, we know you loved us with everything you had. We know you fought to your last breath. You were definitely a fighter. May your spirit rest in Heaven. It’s okay now, it’s okay to be free. Spread your beautiful big wings & fly high. Keep protecting us & watching over us.
