The G7 is coming to Cornwall...and so is the resistance!
We're looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible to Cornwall. Convergence and camping space will be available from Wednesday 9th June with the following days of action planned for the G7:
Friday 11th June - Climate day of action
Saturday 12th June - Internationalist day of action
Sunday 13th June - Kill the Bill G7 special and day of action against repression and surveillance.
But we need to raise some money for this resistance to be as effective as possible. We need to be able to pay for printing, camping space, toilets, hiring minibusses, and everything else you can think of that will make this a summit to remember! Any money left over will go into a solidarity fund to help any people arrested during the summit.
The Resist G7 Coalition is made up of local, national and international groups who’ve come together to build resistance and positive alternatives to the G7. This isn’t about opposing one summit. It’s about building on and creating a legacy, to show what’s possible when diverse groups come together and start organising the world we want to see. We believe in a world where we put people and planet before profit, where justice means justice on a global scale, where wealth is shared equally and not pocketed by the 1%. Our world should not be a plaything for the rich. It belongs to all of us. And it’s down to us, the people, to stand together, to resist, and to create the future we want to see. The world leaders at the G7 aren’t going to do it for us. The system needs changing. And if we want change, we have to act.
Why protest the G7?
The G7 is a meeting of the world’s most powerful political leaders. These leaders govern the richest countries in the world and the G7 exists to keep it that way. Global capitalism is the default setting. The system that creates vast inequalities, both in the UK and around the world, is presented as the only option. It is this system that is seeing our NHS sold off to the highest bidder, that allows people to queue in the snow for foodbanks while pandemic contracts worth billions are siphoned off to friends of government ministers.
The pandemic has only heightened the inequalities of this system. The tragedy we’ve seen in the UK isn’t only due to an inept government – it’s due to a government that puts profit before lives, that’s handed billions of pounds to private companies while those in precarious jobs are unable to support themselves to self-isolate if needed. The NHS was in crisis before the pandemic. But the pandemic has brought it into sharp focus.
Globally, it has exposed inequalities in health care. Those richest nations setting the agenda at the G7 have already brought over 50% of the world’s vaccine supply. Vaccine apartheid is happening with pharmaceutical companies putting profit before world health, backed by the nations of the G7.
The G7 countries are responsible for the vast majority of arms sales that take place globally. They have a vested interest in upholding the system that facilitates weapons being sold to other murderous regimes to kill and repress people around the world. And it is this system that enforces the borders which people have to risk their lives crossing to flee from the bombs G7 countries have sold.
Our planet is on fire. While world leaders dine in a restaurant where the most expensive wine costs £850 a bottle, the climate and ecological crisis rages on.
Yet those world leaders won’t even mention climate justice. Countries in the Global South are already paying the highest price in the climate crisis despite being the least responsible for causing it. And these countries, facing devastation, don’t even get a seat at the G7 table.
Cornwall
Boris Johnson has chosen to host the G7 in a luxury resort in Cornwall with its own private beach. But Johnson is bringing the G7 to one of the poorest places in Europe. Behind the beauty is severe poverty.
World leaders will not see the real Cornwall. Holed up in their fancy hotels that locals couldn’t afford to spend a night in, they won’t see the rundown estates, the child poverty, the fuel poverty and the misery their unjust system creates. But it’s there. On the doorstep of the hotel they’re staying in. Down the road from Carbis Bay, in St Ives, child poverty is at some of the highest rates in the country. Meanwhile, due to the prevalence of second homes, the average property price in the area is a whopping £416,892.
Cornwall has become a playground for the rich. Locals are supposed to be grateful for the money created in menial jobs to serve their needs. Many kids leave as soon as they’re able. With either no jobs or only seasonal work, no infrastructure and no services, it shouldn’t be surprising.
But Cornwall is a microcosm of how the G7 operates. And those in Cornwall recognise the privilege of living in one of the richest countries in the world. Globally, the G7 exists to keep that divide – to keep poorer countries beholden to richer nations; to ensure the poorest people pay the price for the excesses of the richest.
