Concerned Citizens Against Rezoning

Donation protected
The City of Athens AL, Planning Commission recently passed a resolution to support the Re-Zoning of 24 acres of land just north of Whitfield Drive from B-2 to R-2 (Multi-Family Residential) to build a proposed 480 unit THREE STORY APARTMENT COMPLEX to house more than 800 people.

Many concerned citizens who opposed this rezoning have asked how they can help in the fight against this action from an out of town developer.  Here is one way you can help that will directly address the current situation.

This go-fund-me account is being established to help defray the cost for legal counsel, and incidental expenses such as printing flyers, signs, etc. to help  fight this proposed rezoning. Any money that  is raised by this go-fund-me that exceeds the actual cost  of expenses  used  directly  for this effort will be used for beautification projects  for  the subdivisions in the area of the proposed rezoning.

This property that the city has proposed for rezoning, shares a property boundary with the very  established R-1 (single Family Residential) subdivision known as Whitfield Colony.    Many concerned citizens  think this type of spot rezoning will set a very bad precedent for the City of Athens for sharing zone boundaries between R-1 and R-2 zones,  disrupting the harmony of established  R-1 zones with  single family residential neighborhoods.   Many residents in this area,  and throughout the city are also concerned this complex is being proposed without adequate planning to address, traffic, storm drainage,  increased  demand for utilities and without proper covenants or restrictions to  ensure any proposed plan is adhered to  once the property has been rezoned R-2.

This funding is needed immediately because the Planning Commission has scheduled an additional meeting on the subject rezoning for  Monday AUGUST 27th, 2018 at 3:15PM  with a  City Council  Public Hearing to follow at 5:15PM on the same day. Immediately  after the Public Hearing the City Council will go into formal session to vote to approve or disapprove the proposed rezoning request.

Thank you in advance for contributing to this effort. Hopefully with your help we can convince the Athens City Council and City Planning Commission that this type of spot rezoning sets a very bad precedence for the City of Athens,  and that it will disrupt the harmonious and established use of the land in the area for single  family  residential  homes.
