As many of you know, I am currently studying at Vanderbilt University to earn a Master of Arts degree in Latin American Studies. My research is concerned with the Black middle class, wealth creation, self-employment/ entrepreneurship, and economic liberation in the Americas with a special focus on the U.S., Brazil, and Puerto Rico. My Master’s thesis will look at the self-sufficiency and marginality of Afro-Brazilian entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurship as a site of resistance against anti-blackness in Brazil.
In order to complete my Master’s thesis, I have to travel to Brazil to conduct interviews and field research. I was fortunate to be awarded a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship. The fellowship will cover a six-week intensive language course, a course entitled Current Social Issues in Brazil, and a homestay with a Brazilian family. However, I am responsible for paying for the flight. After the six weeks, I am planning to stay four additional weeks to interview Black entrepreneurs and visit Black businesses in the city of São Paulo.
To cover the expense of a flight to Brazil and four weeks in an Airbnb, I am trying to raise $2,500. On average, flights cost $1,500 to Brazil. The remaining will go towards living expenses in Brazil. Please help me make this trip possible. I will be eternally grateful. No donation is too small or large.
