WHAT WE’RE DOING
We are working to get the paddock and barn at our home in Hopewell, NJ to be in good working condition so we can take care of horses from South Jersey Thoroughbred Rescue and Adoption. We need to mend the fences, fix the gates, clean out the barn (which has been used as storage for the past ten years), mend the water pipes, buy mats, bedding, water buckets and basic supplies.
WHY THIS IS NEEDED
We are helping to rescue thoroughbreds. Why do race horses need saving? Approximately two out of every three thoroughbreds that come off the race tracks -- even those that are sound and healthy -- are euthanized, abandoned or slaughtered. Their meat is sent to Europe and Japan for human consumption.
When race horses no longer make any money for their owners this is what happens, and sadly, this is what happens to most race horses. It’s only a very small percentage of thoroughbreds that actually win at the races and so get to live out their years in comfort.
The thoroughbred-racing industry sends an estimated 10,000 horses a year to slaughter. Half of the 20,000 new foals born each year will eventually be killed for meat or abandoned.

WHO WE ARE
I am Tulsi Streeten, a high school student in Hopewell, NJ. I have always loved animals and plan to work to help animals in some way all my life. I’m so glad that now, while i’m in high school, I have the chance to begin this work by helping to rescue some horses and make good use of the barn and paddock at our home.

SJTRA
SJTRA re-homes thoroughbreds whose life at the race track is finished or who are in “bad situations”. We find new ‘careers’ for these horses - sometimes in show jumping, dressage, cross-country or eventing, or sometimes on a farm or with a family who loves them. Since its formation in 2006, SJTRA has found homes for hundreds of thoroughbreds.
When SJTRA moved to a new facility in Pennington NJ, space became an issue, as they are also operating Unicorn Therapeutic Riding in their barn. Having the additional facility at Tulsi’s barn, only a few minutes away, will allow SJTRA to continue to rescue thoroughbreds.
At Tulsi's barn we will rehabilitate, quarantine and give stall rest to rescued horses, until they are healthy enough to go to new homes.
WHEN
We’ve already begun to work on the fencing and cleaning out the barn, and we already owe money to some people who have helped us. There is one horse who is now waiting for a temporary home. We’d like to be able to have a stall and the paddock ready for him by early September. We’re aiming to have everything else ready by the end of September 2017.

Tulsi’s BACKGROUND
I started riding when I was about 9 and have competed in show jumping and just recently in my first dressage show. I am planning now to do eventing - a combination of jumping, dressage and cross-country.
Perhaps my love for horses started when I was 3 years old. Every August since then, we have celebrated my birthday (August 27th) and my “horse-father” Zach’s birthday (August 21st) by going to the Saratoga race track. I love watching the horses parade around the ring before going into the race and talking to the horses and their grooms in the stalls behind the tracks. Even when I was very young, I always wondered and worried if these horses were being treated well.
