we found a magical and amazing place during our travels in the Gambia. Pontus Beach Bar in Brufut owned by the family of Abass. We are a group of friends, who experienced the extrem beauty and big hospitality of Abass and his family. It is our deepest wish, to help them to save this space and to rescue this family RIGHT NOW. According to the increased standards of Gambian Tourism Board (GTB), they are in the risk to lose this beach bar and therefore their existence in rainy season. Please Help!

Hello,
My name is Abass Drammeh from the Gambia. I live with my family in a small village called Brufut on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Our family built and owns Pontus Beach Bar for 30 years now and it is the first beach bar on the Brufut Beach.
In 2014 we had a demolition from the former president dictator Jammeh, where I just woke up one morning with the news, that he had to knock down all the beach bars. It was quite a disaster for me and my family, because I was still in high school and the beach bar is the only source of income for my family. From that income we were paying our food, water bills, school fees for my siblings and even the neighbors around used to benefit a lot from the beach bar.
Late in 2016 Jammeh returns the beach bar to us. Since that time we are still struggling to rebuild the bar and the sources of our family existence.
In my family we are 8 kids including 2 adopted children. Pontus Beach Bar is still our main source of subsistence, which is threatened right now.
Few months ago the GTB confronted us with new quality standards for touristic services. They commissioned us, to update and make renovations.
If we do not fulfil the quality standards our restaurant operational license and the bar will be suspended immediately. Until now we managed to do some renovations thanks to this fundraising. Now we are in off season and don’t have so many customers, our financial possibilities are finished.
Our beach bar is the only source of income for my family and the place is so calm, relax and the meals are nice, most people do like it here.
We are in deep worries because we don't want to lose this golden spot on the beach. We have tried with all efforts to fix the standards.
With all your kindhearted support I have an idea how to rescue my family existence during this years rainy season.
Here is the list of the changes I could do with your help.
- the terace at the back needs to be completed and furnished to welcome the guests and to offer them a protected area from rain and wind
- Build two new restrooms according to the new standards of GTB (cement is needed)
- finishing all renovations which we already started (kitchen, lobby, backyard, roof) to fulfil the GTB standards
Even though, me as a trained banker, my goal and my awareness Is to stabilize the running business of the bar and to anticipate profit from our land.

Hallo,
Mein Name ist Abass Drammeh aus Gambia. Ich lebe mit meiner Familie in einem kleinen Dorf namens Brufut an der Küste des Atlantischen Ozeans. Unsere Familie baut und besitzt seit 30 Jahren die Pontus Beach Bar, die erste Strandbar am Strand von Brufut.
Im Jahr 2014 ließ der ehemalige Präsident und Diktator Jammeh alle Strandbars abreißen. Ich wachte eines Morgens mit der Nachricht auf, dass er alle Strandbars abreißen ließ. Das war eine ziemliche Katastrophe für mich und meine Familie, denn ich war noch in der High School und die Strandbar war die einzige Einnahmequelle für meine Familie. Von diesem Einkommen haben wir unser Essen, die Wasserrechnungen und die Schulgebühren für meine Geschwister bezahlt, und auch die Nachbarn in der Umgebung haben viel von der Strandbar profitiert.
Ende 2016 gab Jammeh die Strandbar an uns zurück. Seitdem kämpfen wir immer noch darum, die Bar und die Existenzgrundlage unserer Familie wieder aufzubauen.
In meiner Familie sind wir 8 Kinder, darunter 2 Adoptivkinder. Die Pontus Beach Bar ist nach wie vor unsere wichtigste Lebensgrundlage, die jetzt bedroht ist.
Vor ein paar Monaten hat uns das GTB mit neuen Qualitätsstandards für touristische Dienstleistungen konfrontiert. Sie beauftragten uns, zu aktualisieren und zu renovieren.
Wenn wir die Qualitätsstandards nicht erfüllen, wird uns die Betriebserlaubnis für das Restaurant und die Bar sofort entzogen. Bis jetzt konnten wir dank dieser Spendenaktion einige Renovierungen durchführen. Jetzt, wo wir in der Nebensaison sind und nicht mehr so viele Gäste haben, sind unsere finanziellen Möglichkeiten erschöpft.
Unsere Strandbar ist die einzige Einnahmequelle für meine Familie, und der Ort ist so ruhig, entspannend und das Essen ist gut, die meisten Leute mögen es hier.
Wir sind in großer Sorge, weil wir diesen goldenen Fleck am Strand nicht verlieren wollen. Wir haben mit allen Mitteln versucht, den Standard zu halten. Mit Ihrer Unterstützung habe ich eine Idee, wie ich die Existenz meiner Familie in der diesjährigen Regenzeit retten kann.
Hier ist die Liste der Veränderungen, die ich mit Ihrer Hilfe durchführen könnte:
- Die Terrasse im hinteren Bereich muss fertiggestellt und eingerichtet werden, um die Gäste willkommen zu heißen und ihnen einen geschützten Bereich vor Regen und Wind zu bieten
- Bau von zwei neuen Toiletten, die den neuen Standards der GTB entsprechen (Zement wird benötigt)
- Fertigstellung aller bereits begonnenen Renovierungsarbeiten (Küche, Lobby, Hinterhof, Dach), um die GTB-Standards zu erfüllen
Auch wenn ich als gelernter Bankkaufmann mein Ziel und mein Bewusstsein ist, das laufende Geschäft der Bar zu stabilisieren und einen Gewinn aus unserem Grundstück zu erwarten.
