Rescue Swags for Treaty Villages

Women in the Treaty Villages on Papua New Guinea's borderlands with Australia have to grapple with unhygienic and difficult conditions when giving birth.
These women have no choice but to use old razor blades or slivers of bamboo to cut umbilical cords.

Five women die at child birth each day and 30% of babies who die under the age of one month do so due to birth related asphyxia or trauma.

We need to raise urgent funds to supply 110 Rescue Swags to trained rangers in the Treaty Villages so they can provide a safer situation to expectant mothers and the wider Treaty Village communities.

The Rescue Swag is a multi-purpose life-saving device. It has comprehensive first aid items and transforms into a sling, splint and immobilisation unit. It is registered with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration as a medical device.
It also comes with an umbilical clamp and stainless steel scissors (for cutting the cord), as well as standard first aid inclusions.

The Swag itself can also be used as a birthing mat.

It is easy to use and female rangers in villages will be available 24/7 to assist women in labour.

How you can help

We need to equip the RRRC-trained Treaty Village Rangers with 110 Rescue Swags so they can respond to births, and emergencies with confidence and in the knowledge that they have the necessary medical supplies to be able to deal with almost any situation.

The Rescue Swag team has committed to supplying one Rescue Swag and one complete refill of each kit’s consumables for each Rescue Swag funded.

Your kind donation will help save the lives of mothers and babies.

Who we are

The Reef & Rainforest Research Centre (RRRC) manages a joint Australian-PNG community development program called ‘Building Resilience in the Treaty Villages’.

The aim of the program is to increase the villages’ self-sufficiency and ability to resist the effects of disease and drought.  The program has successfully trained 52 Treaty Village men and women as Community Rangers using a uniquely Australian model.

Community Rangers are key community-building personnel skilled in sanitation, first aid, community health awareness, plumbing, building, well digging, disaster response, marine rescue and leadership.

These rangers have built eight new wells, delivered 1.25 million litres of water storage capacity to the four Treaty Villages (and a further 90,000L in adjacent Katatai village), and have refurbished the Mabaduan medical centre that was unusable.

Gratitude

Supporters will receive handmade artwork from the villagers, including ‘bilum’ woven bags for certain donation levels, as a sign of their appreciation and gratitude.

The Rescue Swag team has pledged to provide the highest-level donors with their own Rescue Swag. In addition, the units donated by them will bear their name so they can see their contribution in action. Thank you in advance for your kind generosity.
